With Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his council of ministers taking their oath in Delhi today, preparations for the swearing-in ceremony are going on full throttle, the Indian Film And Television Directors’ Association (IFTDA) has written to the PM, demanding an official 'Industry' status for Bollywood.

The demand is nothing new and has previously been placed before the Prime Minister’s Office. However, this time around, the association is confident that it will be granted unlike before. The letter, dated May 25, states, “We may bring your kind attention to the Indian film industry, which has not been given the status of an industry. Our films match in quality with the films of Hollywood and other nations, but our industry has been denied the recognition it deserves. We have pinned all our hopes on you and we know that you will bring all the constructive changes to realize the dream of the best of Indian Cinema.”

Ashoke Pandit, president of the IFTDA, told Bombay Times, “It’s important to table crucial issues immediately so that they can be addressed as soon as possible. We have waited for far too long (for industry status), and we hope that our demands are met with this time around.” Though Bollywood did not receive its due before, if granted, the new status as an industry, it expects business to grow with a faster pace than before.

Having had to lobby intensely for nearly two decades, the Rs 6,000 crore Indian film industry, which sees 800 odd films released every year in almost a dozen languages but mainly in Hindi in Mumbai and Tamil and Telugu from Chennai, is naturally happy to get the "status". But many have not been able to comprehend what exactly the status brings for them.
