Gully Boy is inspired by the lives of two rappers Vivian Fernandes aka Divine and Naved Shaikh aka Naezy. Talking about Ranveer, Divine had said, "He's a cool guy and already dresses like a rapper so he needs no tips in the fashion department from me. It is one thing to get audiences to wake up and listen to our kind of music, which is not about girls, gold, and drugs but about real life in Mumbai. But it is an even greater thing when mainstream actors like Ranveer chose to be a Gully Boy. He's now a part of our movement."
Talking about the movie and working with Zoya again after Dil Dhadakne Do, Ranveer said to a leading daily, "In January itself, I start Gully Boy for which I collaborate with Zoya, who is very dear and special in my life as a collaborator, person as well as a director."
The actor was also all praises for his co-star Alia and added, "Also, it’s my first collaboration on a full-length feature film with Alia [Bhatt], who I rate very high as an actor. She is certainly among the best actors in today’s day-and-age. I believe she is on her way towards greatness."
