Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan and Asha Parekh arrive at late actor Shammi's prayer meet

The prayer meet of veteran actor Shammi, fondly called Shammi aunty in Bollywood, was held in Mumbai today. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan and Asha Parekh marked their presence at the late actor's prayer meet.

Veteran actress Shammi, lovingly known as Shammi Aunty in Bollywood, passed away on March 6 at the age of 89. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan and Asha Parekh marked their presence at the late actor's prayer meet. 

Asha was inconsolable at Shammi ji's funeral. She told a leading agency, "She was close to many actresses who poured their heart out to her. With me, it was special. We had spent decades together. She was my closest friend, confidante and, after my parents' death, a guardian angel. Now she's gone."

Born as Nargis Rabadi in 1931 in a Parsi family, it is said that Shammi ventured into acting by chance. Shammi's first film as a lead heroine was Malhar. Her performance was critically appreciated but the film did not perform well at the box office.

She has done many films like Half Ticket,  Bandish, Ishaara, Jab Jab Phool Khile, Preet Na Jane Reet, Aamne - Saamne, Upkar, Ittefaq, Sajan, Doli, Raja Saab, The Train, Hum Saath-Saath Hain, Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi and many others.

The actor also switched to working in Television shows for a few years. She acted in several TV shows like Dekh Bhai Dekh, Zabaan Sambhal Ke, Shriman Shrimati, Kabhi Yeh Kabhi Woh and Filmi Chakkar.

Amitabh Bachchan took to Twitter to share the news of her death, "Shammi Aunty... Prolific actress, years of contribution to the industry, dear family friend... passes away. A long suffered illness, age... Sad... slowly slowly they all go away."

Amitabh’s son Abhishek wrote: "I will really miss you Shammi Aunty... You always gave the warmest hugs and never failed to make everyone smile. So many memories, so much happiness, gone but not forgotten. Rest in peace."
