At the tender age of 16, Indian Idol junior singer Nahid Afrin is mired in controversies. Recently, Nahid Afrin was asked to stop her scheduled singing performance by a few clerics in Assam. And adding fuel to fire, the media hastily reported that a ‘fatwa’, or an Islamic ruiling, was issued against the young singer.

As a matter of fact, the local media in Assam broke the news saying 46 Muslim clerics had issued a fatwa against Nahid Afrin, asking her to stop her scheduled performance. Thereafter, the diktat was circulated through leaflets and Nahid Afrin’s news spread like wildfire in Assam, across India and not to forget, social media.

But despite all the brouhaha surrounding the singer, a confident Nahid said, “My singing is a gift to God. I believe it must be properly utilized, not doing so is ignoring God.”

As members of the film fraternity came out in support of the singer, Papon took to social media and wrote, “Whoever is responsible for targeting Nahid is depriving a generation of trust and warmth, and creating a Gen X tougher and colder. Unfair.” Musician Vishal Dadlani tweeted, “Just spoke with # NahidAfrin and her parents. They are standing strong. Told her that we all stand with her. She will not give up on music!.”

Recently, at the song launch of Noor, Sonakshi Sinha was asked about the controversy and she said, “I met Nahid Afrin yesterday and I spoke to her about it. Don’t worry she is fine and will continue to sing.

If this was not enough, Nahid Afrin was given threat calls but Assam’s chief minister, Sarbananda Sonowal said, “Such a ruling against practicing art and culture is unacceptable and is tantamount to infringement of one’s freedom of cultural rights.”
