Emma Stone’s backstage statement makes the Oscar goof-up mysterious. Find out why?
Winner of Oscar Best Actress award Emma Stone opened up about the Oscar goof up where they wrongly announced the Best Picture as La La Land instead of Moonlight.
In the 89 years of The Academy Awards, this night will be etched in its history! As Veteran actors, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, at the 89th Academy Awards, wrongly announced Damien Chazelle’s musical La La Land as the winner of the Oscar for Best Picture, and later announced, Moonlight, as the winner of the Oscar for Best Picture, history was in the making.
While the mistake was attributed to presenter being given the wrong envelope i.e. one that contained the Best Actress name, however, backstage, the winner of the Best Actress Award, Emma Stone, told the press that she had the Best Actress envelope in her hand all the while. A leading daily quoted Emma Stone, in the press room, as saying, “I was holding my Best Actress in a leading role card all the time. I don’t mean to start stuff but whatever that story was, I had the card. So I’m not sure what happened. And I really wanted to talk to you first.” We wonder, too, with Emma having the Best Actress Award envelope, what were Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, holding?
Although after the goof-up, Academy issued a statement from PricewaterhouseCoopers, the ballot tabulators, for embarrassing mix-up during the best picture announcement. The statement read, “We sincerely apologize to ‘Moonlight,’ ‘La La Land,’ Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture. The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected.”
Although there has never been a night like this but amid all the brouhaha, the La La Land makers gracefully summoned the Moonlight cast on stage and handed over the trophy to them. Ouch, did that hurt?
