The Past Blast: When Akshay Kumar and John Abraham were to meet Katrina Kaif as wedding crashers
When Anees Bazmee tried to make a laugh riot romantic comedy with Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif and John Abraham, but failed. What went wrong? And what happened next?
After two back-to-back money spinners, Welcome and Singh Is King, Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif and Anees Bazmee had become the most wanted trio of B-Town. The producers were willing to splurge all the money they had to get them back together on a comedy. And well, some almost succeeded in doing so. In 2010, Anees Bazmee had shown keen interest in remaking the 2005 Hollywood comedy, Wedding Crashers, which followed the tale of two divorce mediators, who crash weddings in an attempt to meet women. While the original was more of an adult comedy, the filmmaker had toned down the content making it palatable for family audience of India and narrated it to Akshay, who loved the idea and came on board the film.
Next up, the filmmaker went to Katrina Kaif, and even the actress agreed to be a part of the film, to be romantically paired alongside the Khiladi. The makers were then contemplating on who to cast as the second male lead of the film, and that’s when Akshay suggested John Abraham’s name for the film, and even the actor loved the subject and came on board. It was to mark a reunion for the actors after the cult comedy, Garam Masala. Akshay and John were to play divorce mediators, who more often than not gate crash other’s wedding, whereas Katrina was to play a to be bride, who falls in love with someone who crashed her wedding, which results in a comedy of error. The team had multiple meetings and were gearing up to take the film on floors, however, one fine day, it was suddenly put on the backburner.

The film was shelved because of some issues with respect to the remake rights of Wedding Crashers
While the reason to shelve it is not known at the moment, an insider informs that there was a last-minute issue with the remake rights of the film. After the film was shelved, Bazmee was left to wonder as to what to do next, and since he had Akshay’s date, he decided to make another ready-made subject he had in his kitty, titled Thank You. Even for this, Bazmee first wanted to get Katrina Kaif on board in a guest appearance as Akshay’s back story, but the filmmaker eventually casted Vidya Balan in the film, reserving the Akshay – Kat jodi for another standalone film, which hasn’t seen the light of day till date.
Akshay and John eventually went ahead to work together in Housefull 2 and Desi Boyz.
