Flashback Friday: When Madhuri Dixit and Govinda were at loggerheads as she refused to work with him
Madhuri Dixit has worked with almost all the top actors in the 90s. However, at one time, she refused to do a film with Govinda which annoyed him and he decided he will not work with her in future.
Madhuri Dixit was one of the top actors in the 90s and early 2000s. She started her Bollywood career during the late 1980s. Her acting and dance talent helped her won a lot of hearts and even today, she is loved for the same.
When she was at the peak of her career, Madhuri worked with all the top actors of 90s such as Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Jackie Shroff, Aamir Khan and many others. However, at one point of time, she refused to do a film with Govinda.
Madhuri rejected a film titled Sada Suhagan (1986) opposite Govinda. Even though she had back-to-back seven flops, she was still considered as one of the top actors of that time. It was reported that she said no to work with Govinda as his career was not doing well at that time. Because of this, Govinda was angry with her and hence, after that, he flatly refused to work with her in a lot of films.
In an interview back then, when the Dhak Dhak girl was asked why she refused to work with him, she said that the reason was not because Govinda's career was not going well, but because she didn't want to do a small role. Madhuri had said, " Gawd! I’m absolutely fed up of giving explanations about this controversy. But I’ll do it again. I had signed this film (Sada Suhagan) along with Swati and Awara Baap. Simultaneously, I was also being signed for heroine roles. Like for Uttar Dakshin. And then big producers like Boney Kapoor also began to approach me. So I went and spoke to T Rama Rao and explained that I did not want to act in a small role when I was getting female leads. I did this for my career and not because I had anything against Govinda. In fact, he was still quite a hit after Ilzaam and one wouldn’t shy away from working with him. So I don’t know why I’m not being paired opposite him. Hopefully, sometime in future, I might be paired with him."
Due to this, Govinda had apparently said that he will never work with her in future. However, the duo later starred in several movies like Paap Ka Anth, Maha Sangram, Izzatdaar and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan.
