Flashback Friday: Akshay Kumar - I'm a loner, but I admit I am a romantic
Check out this old interview of Akshay Kumar just after the release of his debut film Saugandh in January 1991.
As Akshay Kumar's Toilet: Ek Prem Katha hits the screens today, we take a look at the actor's old interview, the one that he gave just after the release of his debut film Saugandh, that released in January 1991. Though Saugandh was his second film, it released first, even before Kumar's first movie Deedar opposite Karisma Kapoor could hit the screens.
In this throwback interview, Akshay got candid about himself, his movies and his love for movies!
While many are now aware that Akshay's real name is Rajiv Bhatia, no one really knows why did he change it. When asked about it in this interview, Akshay had revealed, "Rajiv, I felt is a common name. There were so many Rajivs around! Akshay means 'unlimited', in success or anything. After I changed my name to Akshay, I signed Deedar and all the other films. It's been a successful name for me."
Talking about his love for movies, Kumar had stated, "When I was a child, I always thought that stunts and fights were enough to be an actor. So while watching films, I would view the action scenes intently but never the dances, songs or the emoting scenes."
He admitted, "I consider Pramod Chakravorty to be my godfather. The other producers I met, liked my photographs, they liked me but they would ask, 'Can you act? Dance?' I would say no because I didn't know how to act or dance. I was only good at stunts and action. It was only Pramod Chakravorty who never asked me any such questions. I met him and showed him my photographs - bas! He immediately signed me for Deedar, but he never stopped me from signing other films. But Saugandh will be my first release."
Akshay Kumar got candid about himself and revealed, "I want to do everything on my own, even my stunts. I want to be known as the toughest guy in this line. You know martial arts teaches you to be disciplined and that's what I am. I am punctual and dedicated, no producer has any complaints against me!"
Interestingly, twenty six years back, when Akshay was quizzed if he would still remain as disciplined, even after he becomes a star and the Khiladi star had confessed, "I don't know about becoming a star, but I intend to be very systematic and organized always. Even now I get up early every morning, do my exercises, practice my fights and still go on time for shooting."
Apart from martial arts, what was it that piqued Akshay Kumar's interest and the actor's reply surprised us. He had said, "I like to be alone. yeah, I'm a loner, I enjoy listening to romantic songs, I admit I am a romantic (grins) but have no girlfriends as yet!"
Sweet, we say!
