How could I have missed it! This movie was released sometime ago but I've just viewed it recently. So here's my two cents.
Even though I had high expectations, this movie was short on namak/mirchi (salt/chilies) and left a bland taste in my mouth. The writers/editors failed to deliver a successful adaptation on the Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni novel. The plot fails to make the connection that the "spices" are symbolic of Tilo's culture not spices literally. The spices were symbolic and used metaphorically to show her bond to her customs and traditions. But that message doesn't come across in the plot. Although it was visually pleasing, the dialogue and character interaction was completely displaced.
Regardless, even if the movie was short on gripping the audience, this score stays with you. "Aap ki nazron ne samjha" was an original from the movie Anpadh (1962). For the movie Mistress of Spices (2006), Gunjan's vocal controls and Bally Sagoo's remix compose a powerful delivery.
For the listeners who don't understand Urdu/Hindi lyrics, the instrumental flute remix is audibly pleasing as well.
