Akira, directed by AR Murugadoss, starring Sonakshi Sinha, Anurag Kashyap and Konkona Sen Sharma is set to hit the screens on September 2 this year. The audio of the movie has also been released and given that the music is composed by the hit duo Vishal-Shekhar, one wonders if they have managed to strike the chord with the audiences, yet again, just like they did with films like Sultan and Fan earlier this year.

Check out our music review of Akira and tell us which song caught your attention:

Rajj Rajj Ke

Sonakshi will be seen in an action-packed role in Akira and this song gives us abundant glimpses of her character in the movie as she is seen smashing one thing after another throughout the song. But wait, the song is just pop angst and there is nothing more to it. Sonakshi is struggling hard to make that powerful impact, but this is not expected out of a composition from Vishal-Shekhar. No doubt, Sonakshi's anger is inescapable in this number but fails to connect with the listeners.

Purza

"Mein purza purza tera... na aadha pona tera, mein poora poora tera."

Now we have Purza, which is sung by none other than Arijit Singh, but this one is not even an inch closer to what the singer has given us earlier. Purza uses only a few instruments and the simplicity of the music highlight the vocals. A dash of Latino and Thavil does make the song a little bearable, but Arijit has more potential and we all know that. The song gives you the feeling that one lovelorn is incomplete without his lover and you would really not like to hum with Arijit as you might have for the songs like Tum Hi Ho, Kabhi Jo Badal Barsa and Agar Tum Saath Ho. The song might not sound that relatable and you'll crave for the old version of Arijit.

Kehkasha Tu Meri

Remember Shekhar Ravjiani's Marathi song Haravali Pakhare from the movie Balak-Palak? Kehkasha Tu Meri has the same composition, as it's sung by Shekhar himself. But if you already have such a beautiful composition, it doesn't mean that you have all the license to reuse it. And if you know music, you would any day prefer Haravali Pakhare than this Hindi reworking of the song.

Rajj Rajj Ke  (Reprise)

Sung by Nahid Afrin, the reprise version of Rajj Rajj Ke is better than the one by Sonakshi Sinha. And for those who don't know, Nahid hails from Assam and was one of the powerful contestants in Indian Idol Junior 2. And to much surprise, Afrin is just 13 years old, but adds magic to this song.

Baadal

Baadal is Sunidhi’s show all the way, though the pop tune is conventional enough, but with some inventive guitar work by Adil Manuel. It's the guitar which saves the song from a complete disaster. The introduction to Baadal doesn’t get you hooked immediately, but the rhythm and guitar will keep you a little immersed in the song. Sunidhi can do a far better job!

Rajj Rajj Ke (Remix)

This version is no different than any other ordinary remix of a song.

Verdict: The album has contemporary music with shades of Rock music and signature Vishal-Shekhar compositions. The music doesn't really live up to the standards of Vishal-Shekhar, but some elements of the songs will surely keep you hooked!

We give it 50 out of 100 on Pinkvilla meter.
