MSK Prasad, the Chairman of the Selection Committee explained the way replacements were undertaken in the World Cup 2019 tournament. Shikhar Dhawan, after smashing a brilliant century in the match against Australia fractured his thumb and was ruled out of the tournament. He was replaced with Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul took up the responsibility to open the innings along with Rohit Sharma.

MSK Prasad said on Sunday that with regards to the selection, there is a policy that in between the series or mega event like World Cup, he didn’t take any press conference which led to a lot of speculation. "When Shikhar Dhawan was injured, we already had a reserve opener in KL Rahul. At that juncture, we didn't have a left-hander at the top. The team management requested for a lefthander. We had no other choice other than Rishabh Pant. We knew his capability. That's the reason why we had to bring in a left-hander,” said MSK Prasad.

When Vijay Shankar injured himself in the tournament, the selectors turned their attention towards Mayank Agarwal as his replacement. "Subsequently, when Vijay Shankar was injured, why an opener was brought in and that's the confusion. In the game against England, KL Rahul fell on his back and he didn't take the field,” added MSK Prasad. He also stated that a mail was written that they need a back up opener and they looked for their options as well. He revealed that some players were injured and some not in form and that’s how they went with Mayank Agarwal.
