Moved by the plight of a 14-year-old cancer victim, Juhi Chawla wants to build a hospital
A week ago, Juhi Chawla met a woman at a Mumbai hospital lobby and the interaction changed her perception of life. The lady’s 14-year-old son suffered from cancer in the jaw/neck area. It had also begun from an injury sustained while playing football. The wound had perhaps festered and ballooned inside and some two years ago, the doctors started to treat him for cancer.
Despite initial chemotherapy and radiation, the disease recurred. When Juhi met the mother, she was in tears. Financially down, she pleaded with Juhi to help her save her son. “” Parents had run out of money and were now selling their belongings. Now as the doctors gave little hope, the mother was desperate to save her child. She approached me in tears trembling in despair. I promised to do something and I did. I visited Zishan too. He was painfully weak. The chemo and radiation had jammed his head and neck stiff and he couldn’t swallow and could barely breathe The doctors were giving him IV and antibiotics to strengthen him so that they can do one more round of chemo,”” Juhi wrote on her micro blogging site.
Last night, Juhi had a dandiya celebrations at her place and once the function was over, she found a message from her secretary saying that the doctor had given up hope and had asked the parents to take their child away. Juhi tried speaking to the mother but couldn’t get through. Suspecting a wrong diagnosis and follow-up treatment, she wrote: “” Doctors have told the parents to take their dying child away… They can do no further… thec hemo is done .. That’s it… I even suspect the diagnosis .. initial or follow up treatment given by the docs was faulty ..there he was.. A bouncing jabbering happy boyr educed to a bag of bones ..in extreme pain !.. And for the parents to experience this whole transformation… how very very painful… How can hospitals and doctors be so heartless and clinical ?? Where is god ?? Why does he allow such injustice ?? Why doesn’t he help the needy ? I can’t believe I’ve started a festive day with tears and with questions.”
That’s when Juhi took a decision to do her bit to help parents in distress. “” I know what I’m going to do. I will at least try to do .. God please help me make this happen ..build a hospital only for children. A hospital that combines homoeopathy and ayurveda with allopathy!!! Draw from the wisdom of the old and the technique of the new!! Let every mother know that if she needs help… and hope… she can come there… God help me realise my dream.”
