Exclusive: Everyone wants to create the next Babydoll song but I don't think it can be repeated: Sunny Leone
Sunny Leone strikes you as a supremely confident person. Somewhat guarded initially, her straightforward replies reiterate her reputation as a thorough professional. With five films up for release, Sunny fills us in on her forthcoming ‘Ek Paheli Leela’ and future plans in Hindi cinema.
You’ve got a good line up of films- be it Ek Paheli Leela, or Mastizade & the film with Ram Kapoor. The films are with decent leading men & with experienced banners. How have you managed this in about 3 and half years?
I believe that everything with my past, including being part of the Bigg Boss show, and every decision that I made throughout my career in entertainment, as a whole is the reason why a lot of this success happened at this pace. And it’s all about my fans; they are the ones that bought the movie tickets. If it weren’t for them, I would have left already. They are the ones who made my first two films a success and took a chance on a new actor.
From the trailer of Ek Paheli Leela, one knows there is a past life and reincarnation angle….
(Smiles): They wanted to confuse everybody. They wanted to show different images in people’s minds. Yes there is a reincarnation story. The past life of Leela is reincarnated. Leela has the same face in both lives. There are quite a few male characters in both lives and they are reborn too. Their faces aren’t the same. There is also a second female character called Shivani in the film.
Why did you sign it?
I liked the story. Bobby Khan (the film’s director) is a friend of my husband Daniel. He used to tell him the story and the movie that he wanted to create. With any film it takes time to put together everything. I already knew Ahmed Khan from before, so I had worked with him professionally. He gave me my first dance song, Laila, which turned out to be a success. So I understood how he functioned at a professional level. It was easy to say yes to the film, but it was the story that captivated me.
You were seen in the Laila song first, but it’s the Babydoll song that brought you a lot more attention. Has life changed post Babydoll for you?
It’s been a lot different (smiles). Obviously fans and people loved the song but the newest fan following that I got was that of little girls & boys singing the song and loving it. That was something that I saw happen after the song released, and it changed my world in so many different lives! Everyone wants to create the next Babydoll song after that. I don’t think that will ever be repeated. There will be other amazing songs that will be made of course.
My favorite moment was when I was in Nepal, a little girl this high (indicates till her waist) was following us around. Being tourists we were walking around the city. I finally turned around and said hello to her. And she just started singing the song! It was the sweetest moment for me! I was wondering, what is she doing here, by herself, following these adults around the city! In her school uniform, with her backpack on, she sang it!
Are you counting on ‘Desi Look’ does as well too? It’s also sung by Kanika Kapoor
Its been liked, like a couple of other songs from this film. I hope that it stays around, and people enjoy it, but you never know.
You will be having three releases this year. Can you tell us about your other two films? And what are you hoping to achieve after a run of 3 films in the theaters?
I can’t talk about those movies yet. Both are comedies, one is a family comedy & the second one is an adult comedy.
I am happy with the comedy genre and I love it and it is fun. It’s something I have always wanted to do. I hope that once Leela is released that audiences see growth from my end. They might not say that “Oh she is a great actress”. That I am not expecting at all! (Laughs). But I want the word maybe, ‘decent’- she acted decently in this film, and something like she is a lot better than she was in her last release. Those are mainly the compliments I hope for once a film releases. I hope that all 3 films do amazingly well. Everybody’s going to get a healthy dose of Sunny Leone this year (laughs).
Every film of yours, including the trailer of ‘Ek Paheli Leela’- has an element of seduction and sensuality. Do you someday hope to do films without this aspect being included or promoted?
I think that we watch a film because we find the actor or actress beautiful or sexy. That I think is always going to be there. I don’t ever want to try & get rid of something. When you work in entertainment, everything kind of happens the way it’s supposed to happen. So I wouldn’t want to start planning or predicting or trying to change things- its like playing with the balance of how it’s supposed to go forward.
In all my three films I play sexy characters. One of them is a family comedy but my part is of a beautiful, sexy woman. But when I think they watch Leela, it has elements of being well rounded. If I meet the prince & I get married to him, of course, there are going to be sexy moments. All the sensual elements make sense in the script- as I play a model. In the past life too, she is an attractive woman.
Do you find it difficult to dub or deliver dialogues in Hindi?
I dub for all my movies. The dubbing part is not difficult. Things that I have to change on my end are my accent. So that is something that will go away with time & training; because of how fast these films are completing and then needed to be prepared for certification etc; there wasn’t enough time to dedicate to changing that accent. But I will be working on that now.
Do you have a wish list of actors & directors that you would like to work with? Any recent films that you liked from Bollywood?
I want to work with anyone who wants to work with me. So I don’t have a wish list as such. I watch all my movies on the plane and I liked Mary Kom. I think Priyanka has worked very hard for it.
