I am in the process of designing something cool for Ranbir: Riddhima Kapoor Sahni
Riddhima Kapoor Sahni is not just another star kid! Coming from the first family of Bollywood, there were expectations that she would pursue a career in acting or filmmaking. But all that changed when she took the plunge of getting married to Delhi businessman Bharat Sahni and settling down in the capital itself. Mother of a five-year-old Samara, this diva has become a full-fledged Jewellery designer now by launching her own label and she is rather pleased with the results garnered so far! In a recent tête-à-tête with Pinkvilla, Riddhima reveals all about her new venture, her ecstatic brother Ranbir's reaction and her little one Samara's cute wishes to help her Mommy with her Jewellery line! Here are the excerpts:
You were happily working as a homemaker. What made you change your mind suddenly? And why you opted for Jewellery Designing and not just Interior/Fashion Designing where you've had a formal training too?
Jewellery designing has always been something I wanted to do. I enjoy working with different coloured gemstones and creating Jewellery.
From a doting mother to an elegant jewellery designer, how easy or tough has this transition been?
I was nervous and sceptical in the beginning about managing time between my five-year-old and my new venture. At the moment, I am happy multi-tasking doing what I enjoy doing most which are looking after my family and designing pieces.
How is the marriage-career balance coming along? How much time do you spend on designing-in the store and then staying with your family at home?
When I am not working I am with the family and vice versa. When my daughter leaves for her school and my husband for his office, I spend those few hours at work. And then, very late in the night, I spend reading and replying to emails and coordinating with my team.
Where do you draw your inspiration from? How do you work upon it?
I draw my inspiration from everything and anything! It could be a piece of glass, to a print on a garment. Travelling and observing people inspire me the most.
Your evil eye bracelets and pendants are an instant hit with the masses. Is that your favourite too?
I am happy to hear that! All my pieces are my favourite it may sound cliché but it's the truth.
When you first told your parents about your venture, what was their reaction?
My parents have always supported my decisions. And when I decided to launch my Jewellery line, they were just too excited! My father even went ahead and tweeted it and that just boosted my confidence even more.
How supportive is your little munchkin Samara? Does she complain about not seeing her Mamma with her 24x7?
Little samara wants to quit school and help her mamma create Jewellery (laughs). Well, I make sure I finish all my work before she gets back from school so there are no complaints. And once she sleeps, I get back to work. Weekends are mostly dedicated to family, but somehow that never seems possible to me as I am mostly working.
Do you think if you had stayed on in Mumbai, acting bug would have rightly beckoned you? (She was offered a Yash Chopra movie which she denied without any hint of regret)
That was a really long time ago it seems like another lifetime altogether.
You and Ranbir are known to be spot-on when it comes to fashion. How was it growing up together?
Credit goes to mum! I remember at family functions my brother and I were always so well dressed. Hair and shoes were always in place and almost perfect.
Have you gifted your jewellery to anyone in the industry?
My brand is only two months old. I do have a long list people whom I want to gift my pieces to and I will be doing that soon.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of being a well-known star kid in your career as a designer?
There are obvious advantages of being a well-known star kid/sister. Expecting a lot out of someone is the only disadvantage according to me, whether you are a jewellery designer or an actor.
How ecstatic was Ranbir when you first told him about this whole dream? Have you gifted Ranbir something?
I am in the process of designing something cool for him. Although he's not a jewellery person but let's hope he likes what I give him. And yes he was very excited for me when he heard about Riddhima Kapoor Sahni Jewellery!
Are there any other dreams left to conquer?
I am quite a dreamer I never stop dreaming.
Any tips to our Pinkvilla readers on how to get the jewellery right? Like which one to go about on social gatherings?
The jewellery, which I design, can be worn with almost anything and everything - Indian or western. It has been designed keeping in mind both the trends, suitable to Indian or Western sensibilities of styling.
