EXCLUSIVE: 'I have never believed in playing safe' - Ali Zafar
Singer cum actor Ali Zafar, who has had a successful stint in Bollywood, has the audience going gaga over his latest single 'Rockstars'. Ali performed the same for the eight season of Coke Studio and since then his phone hasn't stopped buzzing. From Hrithik Roshan to Sonu Nigam, Ali is receiving praises from all. In a quick telephonic chat, Ali talks to us about his new song and more.
How did you come up with Rockstars?
Music and creativity come up when you try to do it impromptu. I just didn't want to prepare. I wanted it it be spontaneous. As soon as I started jamming, the entire melody came in 3-5 minutes. Instead of taking myself seriously, I thought of showing the humorous side to the life of a Rockstar. Hence I decided to make spoof on my own lifestyle.
What was the inspiration behind those quirky lyrics?
If you hear the lyrics, you can kind of imagine those who pretend to be celebs. They have a characteristic which is common. That is how I came up with those lyrics.
How was it performing on coke studio after 6 years?
It was very different from the last time that I performed. It was lot of fun though this time. I feel fortunate and lucky that I initiated the entire process of the first season along with others. Season 2 I did three songs and that time I was exploring different tangent of music. And now after 6 years, I wanted to try something else. I always wanted be innovative and decided to get into a genre musically which is not common. Sometimes one has to take risk and I have always believed in it. You can't create anything out of the box without that. Unfortunately mostly all that comes your way is conventional and commercial.
Many people have appreciated you including Hrithik Roshan and Sonu Nigam. Are you happy with the risk you have taken?
To be honest, whenever you experiment something, there is always a element of risk. But I always believe that whenever you risk something you either create something fantastic or you go down the drain. I have never believed in playing safe which is why my first film was 'Tere Bin Laden', first production that I am working on is crazy. I am someone who doesn't like to be a part of the herd.
Coming to films, what's next in Bollywood?
At the moment, I have recently launched my own production house which is going on floors soon. All my time and energy is invested in to it. In Bollywood, I am working one project, which is in the pipeline. It is being developed. I don't mind doing one film a year, but whatever I do, I want t to be different.
