The Weeknd, who’s a huge Canadian singer, recently performed during the Superbowl halftime this year, and you will be surprised to learn what he earnt in exchange of the stellar performance.  Not only is the 30-year-old entertainer not getting paid for this gig, but also actually invested USD 7 million into the performance. According to a previous interview the singer gave to Billboard, he’s been focusing on dialing in on the fans at home and making performances a cinematic experience, and he wants to do that with the Super Bowl.

While this is not the first time this has happened, its still a shock. If you didn’t know, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, who performed at 2020 Superbowl halftime show, reportedly agreed to the same deal. Last year, Marc Ganis, president of consulting firm Sportscorp, spoke to Forbes about the duo’s decision and explained: “They are willing to perform for free and even subsidize the production costs through their record label or concert promoters because of this incredible exposure.” “Even the biggest names need to continually promote themselves. The Super Bowl halftime show is the single biggest promotional vehicle for a music star on the planet.”

That’s not all, previously, Bruno Mars and Beyonce also apparently agreed to the same deal with no payment given when they performed at the halftime show. The exposure generally causes huge surges in the artist’s Spotify streams. Justin Timberlake‘s halftime show performance, for example, saw him have a 214% spike in Spotify listens. Apparently, Stubhub traffic also jumps after the Super Bowl shows with a 50% increase seen for all halftime acts.
