Tom Hanks initially DIDN’T want to portray Mister Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood; Here's Why

A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood is out in theatres and critics are calling Tom Hanks’ portrayal of Mister Rogers worthy of an Oscar. But, initially, Hanks had passed on this opportunity of playing Mister Rogers. The executive producers and screenwriters, Noah Harpster and Micah Fitzerman-Blue revealed about it in an interview with Yahoo Entertainment. The writers revealed that the task of casting Hanks for this role was their biggest challenge.
Harpster revealed that initially, it was like a dream thinking about Hanks being in their film, Harpster revealed that “From our very first conversations, we were like, 'Do we even want to embark on this? Because who could play this role? Who could pull this off?' And it was like, 'Tom Hanks. Tom Hanks could pull this off.' We can dream, can't we?” He admitted that Hanks passed the script, “And we had sent him the script years and years ago, and he had passed.”
When Rogers’ widow Marielle Heller stepped into the project, she changed their dream of casting Hanks for this project into a reality. Harpster said, "When Marielle came on, she asked us, 'Who have you always wanted to play Fred Rogers?' And we were like, 'Well, Tom Hanks, but let's get real. And she kind of cut us off and was like, 'Whoa, whoa, whoa. Lemme ask him. Give me a shot.' She called Tom Hanks, as one does, and he said yes and then Micah and I lost our minds.”
