Taylor Swift's latest album 'Lover' bags top spot on US charts, but fails to reach 1 million sales

After teasing fans with new music, Taylor Swift dropped her brand new album 'Lover' last month and Swiftie's -- as her fans are known, couldn't keep calm. Within days of its release, the album topped charts in the US and while this feat did not come as a surprise, Taylor Swift might be a tad disappointed as 'Lover' did not manage to create a record. As per reports, Lover is the first album since 2010 that didn’t crack the 1 million mark like her last four albums.
According to a report in Metro UK, Taylor Swift's last album Reputation opened with 1.216 million (which combines streaming and physical sales, among other metrics). Her three albums before that – 2014’s 1989, 2012’s Red, 2010’s Speak Now – all sold in excess of 1 million in their first week. Her highest sales week was with the 1989 album as it surpassed 1,287 million sales in its first week.
Nonetheless, Lover has managed to rake in 27 per cent of all US album sales last week. The total sales of Lover in its first week stood at 867,000 including the two songs, ME! and You Need To Calm Down, which were released prior to the main album. Opening up about her upcoming album, Taylor Swift had told Vogue that the album is a "new beginning." The album features 18 songs. Yes, 18 brand new Taylor Swift songs which released on August 23. Taylor had said that the album is like a "love letter to love."
