Taylor Swift was over the moon when she won video of the year award for “You Need to Calm Down” at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards. The 29-year-old singer's video which shines light upon the LGBTQ community has been a winner since it first released. During her acceptance speech, Taylor got political as she called out the White House to draw attention to the Equality Act petition for LGBTQ rights. The song, which also has a petition featured at the end of her video, has been urging the Senate to vote on the Equality Act.

Taylor had said, "We deserve equal rights under the law. I want to thank everyone who signed that petition because it has half a million signatures, which is five times the amount it would need to warrant a response from the White House,” Swift said while gesturing towards her watch.

Two days later, the White House took note and has responded to Taylor's petition. On Tuesday, White House deputy press secretary Judd Deere said the Trump administration rejects discrimination but doesn't support the Equality Act bill, reported CNN. "The Trump administration absolutely opposes discrimination of any kind and supports the equal treatment of all; however, the House-passed bill in its current form is filled with poison pills that threaten to undermine parental and conscience rights," Deere replied when asked about Swift's comments.

The Equality Bill has been a hotly contested one and the bill has been passed by the Democratic-controlled House, but has not been brought up for a vote in the Republican-controlled Senate.
