If you haven't been keeping up with the recent developments on the Marvel front, let us help you catch up. A few weeks ago, Martin Scorsese criticized Marvel by deeming MCU movies are "not cinema." Several Marvel actors reacted to the statement. This includes Samuel L Jackson and Robert Downey Jr. Now, legendary director Frances Ford Coppola has called out the superhero movies franchise and deemed it "despicable." Soon after, Suicide Squad 2 director James Gunn took to his Instagram account and defended Marvel.

The filmmaker has worked with the production house on several projects including the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Gunn shared a picture of Groot and Rocket Raccoon from GotG Vol 1 and served his point of view to The Godfather director. He penned an elaborate caption defending Marvel and requested legendary filmmakers to let the franchise be. Referring to the movies Scorsese  and Coppola have made, Gunn said that his grandfather felt that gangster movies are "despicable."

"Many of our grandfathers thought all gangster movies were the same, often calling them “despicable”. Some of our great grandfathers thought the same of westerns, and believed the films of John Ford, Sam Peckinpah, and Sergio Leone were all exactly the same. I remember a great uncle to whom I was raving about Star Wars. He responded by saying, “I saw that when it was called 2001, and, boy, was it boring!” Superheroes are simply today’s gangsters/cowboys/outer space adventurers. Some superhero films are awful, some are beautiful. Like westerns and gangster movies (and before that, just MOVIES), not everyone will be able to appreciate them, even some geniuses. And that’s okay," he wrote.
