One of cinema's modern classics, The Shawshank Redemption, is all set to set to return to the theatres this year as the film will complete 25 years since its release in 1994. The Oscar-nominated film will be celebrating this major milestone as the film will hit the theatres in September this year. According to a report in Entertainment Weekly, the film will be screened at select locations in the US on September 22, 24, and 25. The event will also include exclusive insight from Turner Classic Movies.

The film, which was directed by Frank Darabont and was based on Stephen King's 1982 novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, is considered one of the most popular films of all time. However, that wasn't the case when the film released back in 1994. As per reports, the film tanked massively at the box office and raked in only just over USD 16 million in its initial run.

It currently holds the top spot on IMDB’s user list of the most popular films of all time. The film was nominated for Oscars in six categories including Best Picture and Best Actor, but did not end up winning any of the prestigious awards as films like Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction and Tom Hanks starrer Forrest Gump were in contention.

The Shawshank Redemption revolves around the lives of two prisoners who forge a lifelong friendship: Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), a man wrongly convicted for the murder of his wife and her lover, and Red (Morgan Freeman), who is serving out a life sentence.
