Nikolaj Coster-Waldau was asked about the fans' negative reaction to Game of Thrones Season 8 at the Emmys 2019.

Even though Game of Thrones reached its end in May 2019, when the final ever episode of the iconic series aired, it was still the talk of the town yesterday at Emmys 2019. The cast of GOT reunited, one last time, as they took a final bow and received a standing ovation for their work in eight glorious seasons. However, the final season of Game of Thrones was mostly met with negative reactions from fans. A petition was signed with 1.5 million signatures demanding a remake of season 8.

At the Emmys 2019 red carpet, the cast was bombarded with questions about the fans' response to the final season amongst whom, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau opened up about the same. While talking to Deadline, the 49-year-old actor confessed that the GOT cast and crew were extremely surprised by the negative response. "I think that for a lot of people on the show there was kind of a shock because of this outcry," Nikolaj revealed while adding that the cast and crew, behind-the-scenes, questioned, "Why don’t you like it anymore?"

Emmys was a blast. So lovely to win best drama... feels sad as this really was the goodbye to Thrones for me... am really really going to miss working on Thrones and will miss working with my friends. They are all amazing.

However, Coster-Waldau understands why the fans reacted the way they did. Explaining how these fans love the show, they tend to get invested in it and are a part of communities, through which they find friends. According to Nikolaj, the show ending may lead these fans to believe that it also results in an end to the friendships as well. "Does that mean I’m not going to have my friends anymore? There’s part of this whole equation that’s any ending is a s****y ending, because it ends. And that was never going to be great. But everybody’s entitled to their opinion and it’s just a television show," the actor explained.

"We worked our a***s off. So we did the best we could. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if everybody thought it was the greatest thing ever, but that never happens so…," Coster-Waldau concluded.
