Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese revealed in an interview that he tried to watch Marvel movies but couldn't because according to him, these movies are not "cinema." Read below to know Martin's reasoning for his controversial statement.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) kickstarted with Robert Downey Jr. in and as Iron Man (2008). Over a decade later, it has become one of the most successful franchises of all time, with Avengers: Endgame breaking Avatar's (2009) lifetime box-office collection. While some consider these Marvel movies as just entertainment that mints billions and not quality storytelling, Black Panther (2018) broke the mold and made history by becoming the first superhero movie to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars 2019.
Amongst those who still believe that Marvel movies are not very good is The Irishman director, Martin Scorsese. Martin shared with Empire, "I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema." Furthermore, talking about why he feels the MCU movies are not "cinema", the Oscar-winning director added, "Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being."
