Mark Ruffalo on Marvel films controversy: I would love to see Martin Scorsese create a national film endowment
Mark Ruffalo believes that Martin Scorsese should create a national film endowment that allows young, new talent who are driven by precepts of art. Read below to know more about what the Avengers: Endgame star had to say on the same.
For the past few weeks, Martin Scorsese has been making headlines for his comments on Marvel movies. Calling such films as "not cinema" and more along the lines of a "theme park," The Irishman director argued over the ownership of theatre screens that such comic book movies demand because they are "guaranteed" box-office successes. Hence, for artsy movies, it becomes a barrier as there are fewer theatre screens which lead to lesser funding. Avengers: Endgame star Mark Ruffalo tries to tackle Marty's problem with Marvel movies in a recent interview.
While speaking to BBC Cinematic, Ruffalo stated that if "economics" is how we measure the value of society then, the "biggest thing" will surely dominate and they will try to replicate it, again and again. According to the 51-year-old actor, the Oscar-winning filmmaker was very much suggesting that one should subsidize films and hence, there must be a national endowment of the arts which gives money to "another kind of cinema" and also supports such projects. "If you’re working in the milieu of ‘I’m going to try and make a movie that has economic success,’ which [Scorsese] does too by the way, then how can you complain about that system when you’re not on top of it anymore?," the Dark Waters star shared with BBC Cinematic.
"I would love to see Marty create a national film endowment, and he could do this, that lets young, new talent come in that isn’t just driven by the marketplace but driven by precepts of art. That would be amazing. That’s really the crux of this conversation," Mark added as a suggestion.
