Lord of the Rings star Ian McKellen on WHY he remained closeted most of his career; FIND OUT
Ian McKellen talked about his decision of staying in the closet during most of his acting career and personal life too. The Lord of the Rings actor recently opened up about it in an interview.
Ian McKellen has been a part of some of the most historic movies in Hollywood. Some of his notable roles include Richard in Richard III, Magneto in X-Men franchise, Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings and James Whale in Gods and Monsters. But McKellen has remained in a closet most of his time until he revealed he’s gay at the age of 49. In a recent interview with People, he revealed the reason behind this big step.
Well, the actor wasn’t sure whether the audience will take his acting seriously or not. And, in order to dig his feet deep in Hollywood, he went for a more silent and private life. Ian McKellen explained, “Would audiences take his acting seriously, as Romeo for instance, if they knew that in real life he fancied Mercutio rather than Juliet?”
Meanwhile, Ian has done a lot for the LGBTQ community publicly by writing blogs, raising funds, etc. Ian disclosed his sexuality in 1988, during a radio podcast when the interviewer said something unacceptable about gay people.
