Liam Payne on One Direction: It wouldn’t necessarily be my choice of music now
In a recent interview, Liam Payne recalled writing music for One Direction, back in the day. The Strip That Down singer got candid about how they were forced to write one hit after another, to cater to the target audience. Read below to know more about what Liam had to say about 1D's music.
Liam Payne makes for one-fifth of the most popular bands in recent history, One Direction. Comprising of Liam, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik, the five talented singers were put together in a band, during The X Factor by Simon Cowell. They may have not won the reality television music competition, but they became a huge boyband instead! In the span of five years, 1D released five chart-topping albums and simultaneously went on tours. In 2015, Zayn quit the band and subsequently, after their fifth album as a foursome, 1D went on a hiatus.
In an interview with Esquire Middle East, Liam got candid about making music during his 1D days. While the band stuff was not exactly "scripted," their music process was catered according to the target audience. They would sell out a tour even before they were even done with an album. Hence, they would work on longer choruses for the audience to chant in a stadium. Talking about how their writing was a very backwards way to do it, Payne added that for the band it was, ‘Quick! We need another hit and another and another!’
Liam stated, "It was actually easier to write in that scenario because there were so many hoops you had to jump through. … It wouldn’t necessarily be my choice of music now—it wasn’t something that I would listen to—but I just knew how to make it, if that makes sense?"
