George RR Martin on GoT prequel being cancelled: Saddened to hear The Long Night would not be going to series
George R.R. Martin took to his blog to talk about Game of Thrones prequel The Long Night getting cancelled by HBO. The acclaimed author shared his sadness regarding the news while stating that House of The Dragon had nothing to do with the series getting the boot.
HBO shocked everyone when it announced that the first Game of Thrones prequel tentatively titled The Long Night, which was already shot for and starred Naomi Watts in the titular role was officially cancelled. Immediately after, another prequel titled House of The Dragon was officially green-lit by HBO for one whole season of 10 episodes. For the uninitiated, House of The Dragon will be based on House Targaryen and is set a couple of centuries before the event of A Song of Ice and Fire. The showrunners will be Ruan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik. George R.R. Martin has been heavily involved in the developmental stage.
While talking about the upcoming series on his blog, 'Not a Blog,' George got candid about the cancellation of The Long Night. While giving details of what we could have expected from the series, which was centered on the Starks and the Whitewalkers, Martin shared, "It goes without saying that I was saddened to hear the show would not be going to series. Jane Goldman is a terrific screenwriter, and I enjoyed brainstorming with her. I do not know why HBO decided not to go to series on this one, but I do not think it had to do with HOUSE OF THE DRAGON. This was never an either/or situation."
"If television has room enough for multiple CSIs and CHICAGO shows… well, Westeros and Essos are a lot bigger, with thousands of years of history and enough tales and legends and characters for a dozen shows," the author added.
While writer Jane Goldman and the team will be deeply disappointed with the news, George gives them all his sympathy and thanks for their hard work. But, the show must go on!
