One of the most shocking moments in Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 1 was The Night King's sigil reveal made up of severed arms and Ned Umber's body. Here's what GOT writer Dave Hill had to say about the terrifying sequence.
This week saw the premiere episode of the final season of Game of Thrones. The episode stepped aside from the usual violence that we are accustomed to in GOT and instead focused on several reunions. Whether it be Jon Snow and Arya Stark's highly awaited emotional reunion or even the twist at the end which saw Jamie Lannister return to Winterfell and come face-to-face with the boy the Kingslayer threw off the tower in season 1, Bran Stark. Finally, there was also the revelation by best friend Samwell Tarly to Jon Snow about his true Targaryen heritage.
However, the most shocking moment of the episode was The Night King's sigil reveal made up of Ned Umber's body and severed arms. When Game of Thrones writer Dave Hill was asked about the sigil, he revealed to New York Post, "As we saw with Bran and the Three-Eyed Raven, the spiral pattern was sacred to the Children of the Forest, who created The Night King by sacrificing a captured man in a spiral “henge of stones.” The Night King then adopted the symbol as a sort of blasphemy, like Satan with the upside-down cross."
