Night King, White Walkers and Wights who were hardly seen all this while will dominate the season 8 as winter is finally upon all and Westerors will see the Long night again. Fans will witness the bloodiest battle between the living and icy-eyed dead army when episode 3 which is also the longest in the season goes on air. The Night King and his army have breached the wall and marching south to fight it out. But who is the Night King? Why he was turned into one? And why he wants to wipe out the Westeros (or just wants to kill specific one?) There are so many questions looming inside GoT fans' minds and that's why we thought to decipher some mysteries behind this person and his army.
So starting with who is the Night King, he is the leader of White Walkers and Wights. But before turning into an icy villain he was an ordinary person. In the Bran's vision, we saw how Children of the Forest, magical species, turn a man (played by Vladimir Furdik) into the first White Walker by inserting a piece of dragonglass into his chest. Leaf, a Child of the Forest, revealed that they created the Night King and the White Walkers as a weapon to fight against early humans.
Leaf told Bran "We were at war. We were being slaughtered. Our sacred trees cut down. We needed to defend ourselves … from men.” After the massive war between the Walkers and the First Men, which ended with the defeat of White Walker at the Battle for the Dawn, founder of House Stark, Brandon Stark, a.k.a. Bran the Builder created the Wall to make sure that White Walkers never march down south. And also, Night’s Watch was formed to serve as guardians.
Also, in season 7, we learned that killing a White Walker will also destroy all the Wights. For the unversed, White Walkers are inhuman beings capable of magic and can turn dead people into zombies and these zombies are called Wights. So, killing Night King would presumably destroy the entire dead army. Many theories are suggesting that Bran Stark is the Night King and he using his abilities as the Three-Eyed Raven and is warging into the Night King.
Some strong reports hint on that Night King might actually be a Stark. Some theories suggest that he and his army are actually trying to save Westeros. Speaking of whether they can talk, we don't know yet as we haven't seen them communicating, but as per the books, White Walkers have their own language. Talking about how they can be killed, thanks to Sam Tarly, he discovered that dragonglass can kill them and another weapon is Valyrian steel.
As per Furdik, Night King has a target. But who is that target exactly? Jon Snow? Daenerys Targaryen? The Three-Eyed Raven aka Bran Stark? The answer is still unclear. Furdik told EW, "I think he wants revenge. Everybody in this story has two sides—a bad side and a good side. The Night King only has one side, a bad side." He added, "Somebody made him the Night King. Nobody knows who he was before—a soldier or part of [nobility]. He never wanted to be the Night King."
He also revealed how there will be another Hardhome moment. He said, "There’s also that moment [in 'Hardhome'] when Jon Snow was on the boat and the Night King looked at him and raised his arms — there’s a similar and even stronger moment between Jon and the Night King this time."
