Game of Thrones: Carice Van Houten aka Melisandre confirms THIS impacted GoT's nude scenes
The first few seasons of Game of Thrones featured several explicit nude scenes. However, as the show neared the end, the nudity reduced. GoT star Carice Van Houten reveals the reason behind it.
Game of Thrones was one the raunchiest shows on television in the past decade. The HBO show, which ended a couple of months ago, was not only known for the brilliant filmmaking and storytelling, it was also talked about for its nudity. From Emily Clarke to Lena Headey, many women stripped down to enhance the storytelling. Carice Van Houten was no exception. The actress who portrayed the role of Melisandre aka Red Woman was seen shedding her clothes on the show a couple of times. But avid Game of Thrones fans would have noticed that the level of nudity dropped tremendously after a certain point.
The Dutch actress recently revealed that it was due to the #MeToo movement. The international movement which began in October 2017 after women accused Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault and harassment. Soon after, nudity in films and TV shows were influenced. Game of Thrones was no different. Houten recently revealed that the movement helped the show to realise "that you don’t need it."
Speaking with Deadline, the actress also added that shooting nude scenes wasn't “favorite thing in the world at all.” She said, "It wasn’t my favorite thing in the world at all. But yes, in Black Book I experienced nudity on set. The Dutch are quite open-minded, we’re a bit easier with that. But it’s never comfortable being the only one undressed on set. It was before I had a child. I would be more uncomfortable now. The times have changed in many ways. Back then, it was all a little overwhelming."
However, she clarified that she did these scenes with consent. "No one forced me into anything, but in hindsight I might have been a little more cautious with it.” That's not all she revealed. The actress also spoke about the treatment of her character's death on the show. She expressed that she was satisfied with Melisandre's fate. "It was graceful. I was very grateful to the writers for that. That whole episode was bombastic, but my death was like the final note of a symphony," she added.
Game of Thrones also starred Kit Harington, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams among others. The eight seasons show ended in May.
