EXCLUSIVE: Doctor Sleep star Ewan McGregor reveals THIS factor urged him to join the Stephen King adaptation
Doctor Sleep is set to release this weekend. The Stephen King novel adaptation, which doubles up as the sequel to The Shinning, sees Ewan McGregor bring Danny Torrance back to the big screen.
Danny Torrance has come a long way since the horrific events of Hotel Overlook. But, his "shinning" hasn't lost. While we saw his shine in The Shinning, we are about to meet Danny yet again in Doctor Sleep. The international movie stars Ewan McGregor in the lead, serving as an adaptation Stephen King's novel with the same name and a sequel to the late 1970s movie The Shinning. While the trailers have sent shivers down our spine, McGregor has now spilled the beans on the key element that drew him into the project.
The actor revealed it was Danny's state of alcoholic recovery that attracted him to play the role. "I think even more than the source material—King’s novel and Kubrick’s movie—for me, it was Danny’s story and the idea that he’s hit rock bottom. It was an opportunity to explore someone who is an alcoholic in recovery, and I hadn’t done that before. It really interested me," he said.
Spilling the beans on his preparation, McGregor revealed he has read a few of King's novels. "I like the novel Doctor Sleep very much, which I read after the script. Then, I went back and read The Shining, which I really enjoyed as well. It is just amazing for an actor to have all of this backstory," McGregor revealed.
Apart from the author, McGregor was all praise for director Mike Flanagan too. "I liked working with Mike a lot. When I first met him, he was editing his series, The Haunting of Hill House. I think he wrote Doctor Sleep while shooting the series. He just doesn’t stop…or sleep much, obviously. [LAUGHS] He’s an editor first, so he thinks in shots. He’s a good storyteller, knows exactly what shots he needs. It was exciting watching him and his DP [Michael Fimognari] drawing from the cinematic language that Kubrick used. It was not only how they used the camera, but that they rebuilt the Overlook Hotel. We got to work on those amazing sets. It was really cool," he said.
Doctor Sleep set to release on November 8. Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates.
