How I Met Your Mother is a popular American sitcom based on the life of the fictional character Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) who in the year 2030 telling the story to his kids about how he met their mother. The series revolves around Ted Mosby, Marshall Erikson, Lily Aldrin, Robin Scherbatsky, Barney Stinson living in Manhattan, New York. Ted is an architect, Marshall in the first few seasons is studying to be a lawyer; Lily is a preschool teacher; Robin is a news anchor and Provide Legal Exculpation and Sign Everything (P.L.E.A.S.E.) is Barney Stinson's job in AltruCell Corporation and later in Goliath National Bank.

1] The Mother’s name was revealed in season 1

Ted is talking to his children about how he unexpectedly met with a stripper, whose name was Tracy. During the scene, he throws in "And that, kids, is the true story of How I Met Your Mother" as a joke to make them think he met their mother when she was a stripper.
2] The count down

This might be the saddest episode of the series. This episode is where Marshall’s dad dies. One can see the countdown from the beginning in different scenes of the episode. Throughout the episode, numbers from 50 to 1 are shown by the characters indirectly. Lily tells Marshall that his dad died when the countdown reaches 1 and ends. A fact about this episode is that Jason Segel, the actor who plays Marshall, didn't know what Lily's announcement would be until they were filming the scene.
3] A couple's whole life played in the background of a scene

While the gang makes Canada jokes, in the background of the bar, a couple meets, gets engaged, has a child, the child graduates, and finally, the wife becomes widowed and a new man hits on her. This happens in episode 12 of season 9.
4] Barney’s use of the number 83

Barney often uses 83 while making up fake statistics. He would use 83, 8 or 3 as a number for explaining something bizarre.
5] The reference to a pilot scene

Lily Aldrin in the pilot is seen complaining about a 5-year-old. This is then again used a throwback reference in season 6 episode 6 ‘Baby Talk.’ As she and Marshall are selecting names for their baby, Marshall suggests the name Rob. Rob was the name of the 5-year-old kid who got second base with her finger painting day at the school she teaches. This was shown in the pilot.
