Dean Ambrose had made his WWE debut, a few years back and with The Shield, the wrestler became a household name. His popularity increased three-fold post the split of The Shield and at one point, he was the face of WWE SmackDown Live. However, after surgery kept him away from wrestling for nine months, his last tenure was anything but delightful. In January 2019, it was announced that Dean was leaving WWE once his contract expired and that is exactly what happened.

However, instead of enjoying some time off, Dean switched things back to Jon Moxley and made his surprise debut in AEW's Double or Nothing. At the main event of the PPV, Moxley ambushed both Chris Jerico and Kenny Omega. In an interview with the radio show Flip the Strip, Jon spoke about the WWE stars who messaged him post his surprise AEW debut. Moxley revealed, "Not a lot of questions or detail. But a lot of positivity, texts that say, 'Good stuff man', all really positive. Except for the text that says, 'I can't believe you didn't tell me.' But, I like people to be surprised. But, how much better was it that you really didn't know?"
