The 'Dawson's Creek' alum revealed that he and his wife are mourning the loss of their sixth baby who was due in April 2020. In a video that was played before their performance, the couple said that they suffered a miscarriage earlier in the week and went through one of the 'worst nightmare' a parent has to face. James said, "My wife Kimberly and I went through every expecting parent’s worst nightmare. We lost the baby. The little soul that we had expected to welcome into our family took a shortcut to whatever lies beyond."
The heartbreaking revelation obviously moved many to tears. James, who shares five kids with wife Kimberly, further added, "You never know why these things happen, that’s what I’ve been telling my kids. All you know is that it brings you closer together, it breaks you open, it opens up your heart, it deepens your appreciation. It makes you more human." The actor also revealed that he did not have the strength to dance any more on the competition but pushed himself only for the sake of his wife. "Kimberly, I love you. Kimberly, I’m dancing for you, I’m dancing for us, so here we go, babe,” said Van Der Beek who dedicated the performance to his wife.
