The Oscar race just got more exciting, thanks to a Todd Haynes surprise! In August 2019, it was announced that Todd's directorial Dark Waters, which began filming in January 2019, would be releasing this year and not in 2020. It was a clever move by Focus Features, and judging by the trailer which was out yesterday, we now know why! The Dark Waters cast is led by three-time Oscar-nominated actor Mark Ruffalo as real-life lawyer Robert Billot, who takes on the chemical company DuPont after he finds out that they are releasing harmful pollutants to the drinking water in a small town.

Dark Waters is based on the New York Times Magazine article "The Lawyer Who Became DuPont’s Worst Nightmare." Along with Mark, Dark Waters also stars Anne Hathaway, Tim Robbins, Victor Garber, Mare Winningham, William Jackson Harper and Bill Pullman. The trailer was shared by Ruffalo on his social media pages with a special message, give how he is a staunch environmentalist himself. The 51-year-old actor wrote, "This one is special to me. It’s the story of a real-life hero. And some heroes have their strength on the inside.⁣" Shedding away his Hulk avatar, Mark taps back to his dramatic roots in Dark Waters.
