Avril Lavigne REVEALS her iconic song Sk8er Boi is being adapted into a movie for its 20th anniversary
Avril Lavigne's hit song is turning 20 years old next year and she is making a movie based on the same.
The 20th anniversary of Avril Lavigne's breakout 2002 hit "Sk8er Boi" is approaching, and the singer is feeling nostalgic for simpler times. So nostalgic, in fact, that the 37-year-old singer is preparing a big-screen commemoration of her first album, called Let Go.
“Recently with it being almost the 20th anniversary, a lot of people have been asking me to play this song on some TV shows, so it keeps getting brought back up and people will always reference it to me.” Over the weekend, Lavigne spoke with the "She Is the Voice" iHeartRadio podcast about the song, which she stated is still one of her favourites to perform live. She further said as per Screenrant, “And so, I’m actually going to turn this song into a film… and take it to the next level.”
"Sk8er Boi," which was released in 2002, depicts the narrative of a girl who, while wishing to be with the main character, rejects him based on what her friends think, only to regret her choice years later after he has become famous. When it was released, the song was a smash, reaching the Billboard Top 10 in many countries, including Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The music video was filmed by Francis Lawrence, the director of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and the song became a fixture of the early 2000s pop-punk music genre.
Meanwhile, many famous songs have been adapted into feature-length films, with the most recent high-profile example being Last Christmas, based on the Wham! song of the same name and starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding. Given the narrative aspect of Avril Lavigne's "Sk8er Boi," the storyline of the film may be easily stated as either a prospective love story between two young folks that leads to regret in a semi-doomed tragedy or one where the two characters reunite after years apart.
