One of the greatest palyers to have played the game, South Africa's opener Hasim Amla became the second fastest to reach 8000 runs in ODIs. He achieved this feat in the sixth game of their World Cup campaign against New Zealand at Edgbaston, Birmingham on 19th June 2019.
Despite not having the ability to strike big sixes in the shorter versions of the game, he has developed the art of scoring runs at a brisk pace by playing proper cricket shots. Till date, he has represented South Africa in 179 ODIs, scoring 8031 runs at an average of 49.26 including 27 hundreds.
Hashim Amla needed 24 runs to go past this magic number before the start of this game. It was South Africa's turn to bat first and he achieved this landmark in the 12th over off Lockie Ferguson's bowling. In doing so, he became the fourth South African batsmen after Jacques Kallis, Herschelle Gibbs and AB de Villiers to score 8000 ODI runs. He went on to add 30 more runs to this tally before losing his wicket to left arm spinner Mitchell Santner for 55.
Here we have a look at the list of batsmen who were the quickest to reach 8000 runs in ODIs:
175 innings- Virat Kohli
176 innings- Hashim Amla
182 innings- AB de Villiers
200 innings- Sourav Ganguly and Rohit Sharma
203 innings- Ross Taylor
Interestingly, Hashim Amla also holds the record for being the quickest to reach 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000 and 7000 ODI runs.
With his unmatched dedication and passion to play the game, he is expected to add more runs to his tally and help his side to victories in the upcoming days.
