GFRIEND’s Sowon faces backlash after posting pic with Nazi statue; Agency says she’s heartbroken over uploads
GFRIEND’s Sowon recently got in trouble with the online community of fans after she posted a photo of herself with a Nazi soldier’s statue.
GFRIEND member Sowon recently got a taste of online trolling after she posted a photo with a nazi soldier statue. The group that formed in 2015, is a six-member South Korean girl group with members Sowon, Yerin, Eunha, Yuju, SinB, and Umji. Sowon’s photo created quite a stir online after they got posted, which is when the pop icon quickly deleted them. However, the global fans of the group captured the image and showcased it on Twitter later.
As soon as the tweet went live, K-pop fans flooded social media sites with replicas of the photo. While many thought that the photo was captured at a museum, it was actually taken on the sets of GFriend's album called Walpurgis Night comeback show. The exact location of the shoot--Cafe Zino located in Paju (according to fans) is famous for appearing in several shows like Crash Landing On You, Goblin, and The Heirs.
Even though the idol is loved by her fans, many demanded that Sowon apologizes for hurting the sentiments of people all around the world. Many fans were shocked and enraged to see photos and were left wondering why Sowon would pose with a Nazi mannequin in the first place. While some argued over the popstar’s obliviousness, some blamed the Holocaust education in Korea.
Update: GFRIEND’s agency Source Music has just now issued an apology. In their apology statement via Soompi, the agency stated that the shooting staff took several photos to post on the artist’s social media accounts, and the picture in the debate was just one fo them. The statement further mentions that on the day of filming, the department responsible for checking the set was unaware of the problem with the mannequin’s attire and the pictures were posted without any awareness of the issue.
The agency then apologised for not checking the filming site for inappropriate props in advance, and not paying closer attention to historical facts and societal issues. They even said that the “problematic portion” of the video has been corrected as of now. Sowon is also very upset and surprised after becoming aware of the meaning of the content of the photos and deleted them immediately, and she felt deeply responsible and heartbroken over uploading such photos.
