It is not surprising to see Vidya Balan in an author-backed role like that of Tumhari Sulu. The actress has delighted us in many a role, be it in Kahaani, The Dirty Picture, Begum Jaan, Ishqiya, Bhool Bhulaiyaa to her beginning in Parineeta. Is there any character that she has not played and therefore longs to do? In an exclusive interaction with PINKVILLA, Vidya Balan told us, "Indira Gandhi. I long to play Indira Gandhi."

Vidya Balan had been offered the role of Indira Gandhi, the late prime minister of India who was also the only woman PM of India. It was to be directed by Manish Gupta, but it seems the film didn't work out. Says Vidya, "I've been offered the role of Indira Gandhi a couple of times but it's not really worked out so far in terms of script. Maybe someone writes a good script someday...."

When we asked Vidya if she admired the late prime minister, she replied, "Yeah. I just find her a formidable force. And when we think of a powerful name in the country Indira Gandhi's name is foremost and the only woman prime minister we've had. So, I'd love to play Indira Gandhi. But lots of other things as well. I could never imagine I would play a homemaker who is a late night RJ (in Tumhari Sulu). My imagination is very limited in it. I'm hoping there are lots of writers who can think of interesting stories to tell with me."

But surely Vidya Balan must be getting a lot of good scripts to read...

"Yeah," she says. "But sometimes the idea doesn't translate into a good script. I've still done films which are idea-based, but something's got lost in translation. And sometimes it is just...it is not actually the amount you're getting (paid) but what actually resonates with you and what you instinctively feel like doing."

So, is there any role you feel you cannot do, Vidya? For example, going back to your Hum Paanch days, there was a character called Kajal Bhai played by Bhairavi Raichura. Do you think you could not have pulled that off?

"No, I don't think as an actor I have any limitations in my head," signs off Vidya Balan.

With that, it definitely looks like it will be a treat to watch Vidya Balan in Tumhari Sulu. The film releases worldwide on November 17, 2017.
