EXCLUSIVE - Vicky Kaushal on Sanju's success: Sanjay Dutt called me & said he could connect to the friendship
Vicky Kaushal plays the role of Kamlesh - Sanjay Dutt's best friend in Rajkumar Hirani's Sanju. We got in touch with the actor to know his reaction on the massive numbers that the film has opened to.
Vicky Kaushal - he is a man who believes in true art and that's evident in the characters he played in Masaan, Raazi and the latest one being Sanjay Dutt's best friend Kamlesh in Rajkumar Hirani's Sanju. The character of Kamli has a cathartic impact on you and will stay with you long after you walk out of the theatre.
He portrayed the character of Kamlesh just the right way and everyone was appreciating the act he has put up. Currently, the actor is in Serbia shooting for Uri and is also soaking in the reactions that he has been getting on social media. On the opening day, the film collected Rs 34.75 crore at the box office, which is massive.
We got in touch with Vicky over a call and when we asked about the good reviews that have been pouring in, he told us, "More than the numbers, it's the love that people are showing - How they could connect to the friendship, father-son emotion and the characters. So all of that is very heartwarming. People are saying that they all need a friend like Kamli. For me, honestly, being a part of a Rajkumar Hirani film is in itself a dream come true. I was happy that I am a part of this special film."
Further, into the conversation, we asked him if has he met Kamlesh in real life. "I have met Kamlesh. He had visited us once we were shooting in Mumbai. We spoke over WhatsApp yesterday. He is in Mumbai, but I am in Serbia shooting for Uri. He met my family members there in Mumbai. He told me yesterday that he could connect to it and even Sanju sir called me and said the same - he was touched. He felt that friendship," said the actor.
Those who have seen the film would agree that Vicky has picked up the Gujarati accent really well. On this, he said, "I did train for it and I would like to credit this to Dimple Shah who is into Gujarati theatre. Even the co-writer of the film is a Gujarati and we used to sit and work on the dialect. I was quite scared but luckily I did manage to crack it."
We also told him that many viewers have said that he was the star who stole the show and many went on to say that he has done a better job than Ranbir. On a subtle note, he said, "I just want to say that I am a baby star in front of Ranbir Kapoor and what he has done for the film industry is just magic. There are very rare actors who have so much honesty in what they do. He portrays that honesty in every character he plays. I am glad that I got to work with him in Sanju and would love to work with him again."
