Raazi is based on Harinder Sikka’s book Calling Sehmat, a fictionalised take on the real story of an Indian woman who married a Pakistani man to spy for India. Alia Bhatt plays Sehmat and Vicky Kaushal is seen as Iqbal (Sehmat's husband) in the film. Alia is known for her method acting and getting into the skin of the character. In Raazi's trailer, Alia has delivered a power-packed performance. We also got to see a glimpse of Alia's mother Soni Razdan in the trailer.
Well, to dig deeper to know what exactly is Soni's role in the movie, we got in touch with her and asked about her character as she comes only for a second in the trailer. On this, she told us, "I know, it's not there only (laughs). I am very much there in the film and I am playing Alia's mother. I am reacting to all that's happening and it's pretty clear from the trailer to what's going around. It's very traumatic for any mother to see her daughter go through any sort of hardships."
Panning the conversation about how a mother perceives her daughter's journey, we asked about how she see Alia's cinematic career. "I think her journey has been unusual as she has made unusual choices. Student Of The Year was a commercial type of a film, I would say a typical Bollywood film and that platform was great. She could have probably continued doing more of the same and what's interesting is that she has chosen not to do it and went the other route. What's more interesting is that the other stuff is being written and I find it wonderful. These are a different kind of films and roles that are giving the opportunity to not only her but other actors. I am so happy that she is one of those people who is sticking her neck out and is taking risks. Not that Raazi is a risk, I am generally saying. See Highway, it was a complete contrast. It was a huge change. The very fact that she has gone that route has proved to me that she is a born actress," added Soni Razdan.
Ten minutes into the conversation, we started talking about how dealing with the pressure for a star kid isn't that easy. Stating the difference between a star kid and non-star kid, Alia's mother told us, "I think probably you balance the two things out and it's evened out. For a non-star kid, it's very difficult to get a break in the industry in the first place, you have to already be exceptional. I have to be exceptional as women in a workplace as they have to be better than men to be able to get the job. See, this industry is a very fair industry, it will give you your due as long as you are delivering the good. Whether you are a star kid or not, your audiences are there to see you. At the start, there would be an attraction, but later if you are not able to deliver, they won't have the same feeling for you."
Alia will also be seen in Brahmastra which is being helmed by Ayan Mukerji and stars Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role. What about it? "I know how exciting. No one tells me anything so I am so equally curious to know what the film is all about," said Soni.
Alia got hurt on the sets of Brahmastra. When asked about her health, Soni told us, "She is still getting better. Let me put it this way she is recovering."
When we were just about to end the conversation, we complemented that Alia is so down-to-earth and handles stardom pretty well. "I am a lucky mother and I know that. I think handling not only stardom but everything and to be relaxed at this platform, be able to deal with it and not let it get overhead, it's actually not that easy but she makes it look like that. She makes it look like effortless," Soni ended the conversation on a positive note.
