Sanjay Dutt’s sister Priya to file petition in Supreme Court
Priya Dutt, sister of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, will file a petition in the Supreme Court today to challenge his conviction under the Arms Act and the sentence of six years rigorous imprisonment by a special TADA court.An application will be simultaneously made to secure Dutt’s bail. A prayer for probation will form an integral part of the appeal. Dutt’s bail plea will take a couple of weeks to be heard and decided.The Dutt family is challenging the judgement given by a special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) court for the illegal possession of arms on July 31.Special Judge P D Kode also fined Rupees 25,000 on the star and rejected his probation plea. On Friday, Priya Dutt, a member of Lok Sabha from Mumbai, met Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi and apprised her of ongoing situation. She said that her family would be deciding on the next course of action in next two days for her brother's release.Meanwhile, Union Minister for Science and Technology Kapil Sibal said that the Congress Party should stand by Sanjay Dutt."I have said it before and I continue to say that because the fact is Sanjay's father (late Sunil Dutt) was closely associated with the party, symbolised and epitomised what the party stands for. His daughter is the member of the party,” Sibal said on the sidelines of a conference.In times of need and stress, Sibal said the party should be seen to be with the family and that has nothing to do with the merit of the case.“As far as the merit of the case is concerned, all help will be given to the family to deal with the situation," he added.Sanjay Dutt has already spent nearly 16 months in prison before being released on bail in 1996.
