Who has not heard of Marilyn Monroe, the bombshell of Hollywood.She is one lady whose picture adorns the walls of many teenage guys' rooms even to this day.Her life is a typical example of the saying "from rags to riches". Born on 1 June 1926 in Los Angeles as Norma Jean, her mother's name was Gladys Baker and her father's identity is unknown.She had a very tumultous childhood.Due to her mother's mental illness, Norma jean was moved to numerous orphanages and foster homes. Later on when she shot to fame , she once said that she was sexually abused in one of the foster homes.At the age of 16 she married her neighbour Jimmy Dougherty.But this marriage was not to last.Jimmy spent most of his time outside. He was with the merchant marines.
Initially Marilyn tried her best to be a good wife.But due to her husband's incessant travels their marriage broke as by then Marilyn was already a photographic model.In 1946, she signed her first contract with 20th centurey fox and changed her name to Marilyn Monroe.She acted in many movies, like Some like it hot, Gentlemen prefer blondes,The Prince and the Showgirl, Bus Stop, The Seven Year Itch, How to Marry a Millionaire etc.In 1954 she married base ball player Joe DiMaggio.Joe wanted her to be a homely person and a nice wife, but Marilyn was maddened by the fame and fan following she had and due to differences they split.Later on she even dated the then US president Robert F Kennnedy and his brother Bobby Kennedy.She also took to alcohol and drugs.
On the 5th of August 1962 she was found dead in her bedroom.She was lying naked with her face facing the bed, and holding the phone reciever in her hand.There was an empty bottle of sleeping pills next to her bedside.The cause of her death is still a mystery.Few claim that it was suicide, few others that she was murdered due to her linkups with Kennedy brothers.It is said that she knew a few secrets. when Kennedy did not respond to her phone calls she threatended to reveal those secrets.It is also claimed that she died due to an overdose of sleeping pills.
It is also said that just after she died few items including a diary were removed from her room.The orders came from thwe White house.Some witnesses claim that they had seen her body being taken to a near by hospital secretly in an ambulance before being brought back to her Brentwood apt.Joe DiMaggio claimed her remains and arranged a small and quiet funeral for the woman he continued to love up until her death.It is believed that slightly before she died she and Joe had decided to reunite and she was very happy about it.Marilyn is buried at Westwood Memorial Cemetery. The service was attended by only 30 people.
