KEEP UP THE SPIRIT: Sunaina Roshan (above), who successfully battled the deadly disease, has words of comfort for Jade Goody

Even as Jade Goody is diagnosed with cervical cancer, Sunaina Roshan has words of comfort and assurance for the Bigg Boss contestant. "If she keeps up the spirit, she won't even know when it's over," said Sunaina, who successfully battled the deadly illness.

Recalling the harrowing experience since the cancer was detected last year, Hrithik Roshan's sister told MiD DAY, "The hardest part was when I had my head shaved. I prayed that though I was suffering from cancer, my hair would stay. It was something I was proud of. The day I sheared it all off was the hardest to bear."

During this period, Sunaina had to survive on baby food because her appetite was at an all-time low. "Yet, I put on 20 kg. But I did not shed a single tear because I knew I had the support of my family and friends. Besides, I was confident that God would pull me through this," said Sunaina.

With strong willpower, Sunaina not only managed to fight the cancer, but also resumed work. At the time of her second last chemotherapy session, she was even working as co-producer of Krazzy 4. "It was difficult, but I dealt with it all with a smile. It's really your spirit that pulls you through and because I remained so positive, my blood platelet count didn't drop drastically," she said.

Cervical cancer is estimated to be the second-most common cancer in women after breast cancer. According to experts, the number of cervical cancer deaths in India is likely to rise from about 74,000 to 79,000 by 2010.

No hope lost

According to Dr Nagraj Huilgol, oncologist at Nanavati Hospital, in case of cervical cancer, the chances of survival if detected at an early stage are as high as 95 per cent. Symptoms include painful sex, vaginal dryness, urinal problems and in some cases, inflammation of the rectum.
