Sri Lanka stunned England by 20 runs

Sri Lanka on Friday surprised the whole world as the Lankans produced the biggest upset of the ICC World Cup 2019 so far by defeating hosts England at Headingley. The Dimuth Karunaratne-led side completely shook England with an unreal performance, especially in the bowling department.

After scoring a small total of 232 runs on board, the Lankan lions left strong English batting line-up clueless. England, having scored over 300 runs in almost match in the tournament, fell short of 20 runs in reply. The match was a nail-biter as it changed direction with every new ball. Let’s go through highlights.

Angelo Matthew’s special unbeaten knock

The experienced Angelo Matthews was being targeted for not displaying what he is better known for, however, the all-rounder finally found the touch. Amid Sri Lanka’s batting collapse, he came to the rescue, scoring a special unbeaten knock of 85 runs to help his team scoring a fighting total of 232 runs. The Colombo-born cricketer hit four fours and a six in his innings.

Lasith Malinga’s old magic

Lasith Maling, despite being in his mid 30’s, bowled one of the best spells of the World Cup as the right-arm pacer ran through England batting line-up. He started brilliantly by sending back Jonny Bairstow in the very first over and followed with the wicket of other opener, James Vince’s wicket. Later, when brought back into the attack, the experienced campaigner first removed set batsman, Joe Root and immediately the danger man, Jos Buttler, getting Sri Lanka close to the win. Spinner, de Silva also played a crucial role in handing Lankans the victory as he scalped three important wickets at the back end of innings.

Ben Stokes’ innings to remember

Although England failed to cross the line, Ben Stokes’ unbeaten inning of 82 runs will be remembered for a long time. The left-handed batsman not only kept his team alive till the very end but executed his innings quite smartly. When batting with tail-enders, he snatched those fifth/last ball singles and scored cruel boundaries in between. However, lastly, he was unable to take England home and Mark Wood nicked one off Nuwan Pradeep.
