Who do we(Bollywood) crave for western approval(Hollywood)?

One thing that become apparent to me from the Cannes film festival 2011 is that Bollywood inherently craves for western approval.

When I say western approval, what I mean is looking for a thumbs up from fashion critics in the west, posing with Hollywood celebrities to prove that you are in the elite group, also making a big hue and cry when the western media does not recogize you. Talking about movies, if some random Hollywood celeb says good things about a Bollywood movie, the news makes it to the headlines in dailies. And more often than not Bollywood yearns for awards from the west.

Bollywood is nothing but an extension of ourselves. So I guess each Indian does it too. But let us focus on Bollywood for our discussion.

My big question is why do we need the western approval? Bollywood is a multi billion dollar business second only to Hollywood. Our movies caters to different demographic who represent a different culture, upbring and value system. The west frankly think of Bollywood movies as song and dance stories.

Are we giving too much importance to what west thinks of us and our movies. Should we even care?

P.S: this is not abou Cannes but about Bollywood.
