Sleeper Hits of 2018: From Badhaai Ho to Stree, movies which proved that 'Content is the King'

This year, several films surprised us with their amazing storylines and kickass performances by the actors in it. Pinkvilla has zeroed down the list of movies which were sleeper hits of 2018. Let's take a look.

2018 proved that 'Content is the King' and you don't need bigger stars for a hit film. A normal film with an interesting plotline can easily catch the attention of the audience like it did this year. Several movies gave us emerging superstars and we are thankful to these filmmakers to explore interesting plotlines. From romcoms, murder mystery, horror comedy to social issues, 2018 had it all! Moreover, these films made us fall more in love with actors namely Ayushmann Khurrana, Rajkummar Rao, Vicky Kaushal to name a few.

Let's take a look at the sleeper hits of 2018:

Andhadhun


Sriram Raghavan's edge-of-the-seat thriller literally gave everyone chills. The film had all the perfect elements of a murder mystery and it will give you major retro vibes like Teesri Manzil, Ittefaq and more. The film has also given a perfect ode to La La Land in the climax and audience were left in shock towards the end as well. The movie entered Rs 100 crore club in its lifetime business.

Badhaai Ho


When the movie was announced, no one had any idea about its plot. When two new posters came out, still people couldn't figure out what is the movie all about. Just a few hours before the trailer was released, they revealed a poster which showed Neena Gupta pregnant and Ayushmann left in shock, which led to a lot of surprise and confusion. Badhaai Ho is a beautifully made film which showed that anyone can become parents at anytime and there's nothing to be ashamed of. Gajraj Rao, Neena Gupta and Surekha Sikhri were the hearts of this amazing film. Badhaai Ho was another Rs 100 crore club movie of 2018.

Hichki


Rani Mukerji made a comeback to the big screen after four years with Hichki, in which she played the role of a teacher suffering from the Tourette Syndrome. The film was loved for its simple yet impactful storyline. Hichki made a lifetime collection of about Rs 231.77 crore worldwide.

Manto


Nandita Das's much awaited directorial finally hit the screens this year with Nawazuddin Siddiqui playing the titular role. The film showed Nawaz nailing the perfect role of Indo-Pakistani, author and writer Saadat Hasan Manto. He convinced the people that it's not Nawaz, but Manto himself on the big screen. The film was critically acclaimed and loved by the audience.

October


Shootjit Sircar gave us a soulful movie which was a kind of a musical with no music. Varun Dhawan was seen in a never-before-seen role and gave people goosebumps with his noteworthy performance. October intrigued the audience in a subtle way as nothing was revealed about the film until it released. 

Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran


After much delay, Parmanu witnessed broad daylight on May 25, this year and it can be easily considered as a sleeper hit. The film was based on the nuclear bomb test explosions conducted by the Indian Army at Pokhran in the year 1998 and starred John Abraham in the lead role. The film went on to make a lifetime collection of Rs 64.81 crore at the domestic market. 

Raazi


A "woman-centric film" entering Rs 100 crore club deserves all love. The film was directed by Meghna Gulzar and starred Alia Bhatt in the lead role, wherein she gave a power-packed performance. Watching Raazi will make you emotional, proud and give chills at several sequences. The film can be considered as one of the best ever made!

Stree


Last but definitely not the least - Stree! This movie can be enjoyed thoroughly from the word 'go'. Stree is a film which perfectly falls under horror comedy genre and how! Rajkummar's sweet, innocent look to a ghost, who strips men, the film had everything which will leave you in splits, shock and more. Stree was another sleeper hit which entered Rs 100 crore club, deservedly!
