Meet Bollywood's first family - the Kapoors

From Prithviraj Kapoor to Ranbir Kapoor, it’s delightful to see how the Kapoor khandaan has been carrying forward its legacy for four generations and continuing to entertain us! Here’s a look at the massive family tree of the Kapoor clan -

1st generation:

Prithviraj Kapoor

It all started with this Kapoor who was the first from the family to pursue acting. He made his debut with Alam Ara in 1931 and did a host of films after that. One of his most memorable performances is of the role of Akbar in Mughal E Azam. Prithviraj got married to Ramsarni Mehra and gave birth to Raj, Shammi, Shashi and Urmila.

2nd generation:

Raj Kapoor

Raj Kapoor, Bollywood’s Showman made outstanding contributions to Indian cinema. His renowned works include Mera Naam Joker, Andaz, Shri 420 to name a few. He married Krishna Kapoor and had 5 children – Randhir, Ritu, Rishi, Reema and Rajiv. This showman believed that “whatever happens, the show must go on” and indeed it did, with his children and grandchildren carrying forward his legacy beautifully.

Shammi Kapoor

Known to be India’s Elvis Presley, Shammi Kapoor changed the face of Indian cinema. Who can forget his hip-swinging moves to peppy dance numbers! He was the king of romance and his charm and boisterous nature will always be fondly remembered. He married Geeta Bali and had two children, Aditya and Kanchan. After a few years after Geeta’s death, he married Neela Devi Gohil.

Shashi Kapoor

The poster boy of those times, Shashi Kapoor was one hell of a heartthrob. He charmed the audience for years together with his chocolate boy looks and excellent acting. He married English actress Jennifer Kendal. They had 3 children – Karan, Kunal and Sanjana.

3rd generation:

Randhir Kapoor

The eldest son of Raj Kapoor, Randhir made his debut with Kal Aaj aur Kal which starred his grandfather, father and wife as well. Even though Randhir wasn’t around much, he did give a few hits. He married actress Babita. The couple has two daughters – Karishma and Kareena.

Ritu Kapoor Nanda

The eldest daughter of Raj Kapoor did not enter films. She is a prominent entrepreneur, married to Rajan Nanda. She has two children – Nikhil and Natasha. Nikhil Nanda is married to Amitabh Bachchan’s daughter, Shweta Bachchan Nanda.

Rishi Kapoor

One of Bollywood’s most loved hero who continued to make women swoon for many years, Rishi Kapoor is a living legend! He has been in the industry for 4 decades and still is as rocking as ever. Bollywood’s lover boy Rishi married his co-star Neetu Singh. They have two children – Riddhima and Ranbir.

Reema Kapoor Jain

Raj Kapoor’s second daughter too stayed away from films. She is married to Manoj Jain and has two sons – Armaan and Aadar. Reports say that Armaan will be making his acting debut soon. Reema appeared on Koffee with Karan with her brothers and Neetu Singh.

Rajiv Kapoor

Rajiv had a short stay in the film industry. He acted in only 13 films with the famous Ram Teri Ganga Maili being one of them. He also tried his hand in directing and producing films. He married architect Aarti Sabharwal but the marriage ended two years later.

Karan Kapoor

Shashi’s son, Karan was a famous model of the 1980s. He appeared in a few Hindi films before he started modeling for Bombay Dyeing. He later went on to become a photographer. He now lives in London with his wife and children.

Kunal Kapoor

Kunal too had a very short stint in the industry. He set up his own company, Adfilm-Valas, and started producing and directing television commercials. Kunal married Ramesh Sippy's daughter, Sheena. The couple got divorced and has two children.

Sanjana Kapoor

Sanjana who always had a love for acting ran the Prithvi Theatre for almost ten years. She then decided to leave and started her own theatre company, Junoon. She married wildlife expert Valmik Thapar and has a son, Hameer.

Aditya Raj Kapoor

While most of his family members were making their mark in Bollywood, Shammi Kapoor’s son, Aditya decided to become a businessman instead. However, the ‘Kapoor gene’ in him gave in and he decided to make his acting debut at the age of 53!

4th generation:

Karisma Kapoor

The first woman in her family to take up acting, Karisma Kapoor is a stunner. She came a long way from starting with Prem Qaidi to giving hits like Raja Hindustani, Zubeidaa, Fiza and many more. Karisma tasted both, commercial and artistic success. She married to industrialist Sunjay Kapur and has 2 children – Samaira and Kiaan.

Kareena Kapoor

The younger Kapoor sister is no less. Who would have thought that the actress who starred in movies like Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hain and Khushi would later become such a huge star! Also known as the 100 crore heroine, Kareena’s career graph has seen many ups and downs. Today, she is a highly acclaimed actress with several blockbusters in her kitty. The actress dated Shahid Kapoor for a while before marrying Saif Ali Khan, her boyfriend for 5 years.

Ranbir Kapoor

The newest Kapoor taking Bollywood by a storm, Ranbir is all set to make it to the top. His journey as an actor from Saawariya to Yeh Jawani Hain Deewani is surely noteworthy. With a huge fan following, Ranbir continues to surprise the audience with every passing film of his! Looks like this one’s going to rule Bollywood in the coming years!
