Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar is celebrating her birthday today. Lata Didi, as she is fondly called has completed more than 75 years in the industry and has crooned over 10,000 songs in the span of seven decades. She is the recipient of India's highest award in cinema, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, which was bestowed on her in 1989 by the Government of India. She is India's only second vocalist to be bestowed with India's highest civilian honour - the Bharat Ratna. Lataji has also won three National Awards for her singing in films Parichay, Kora Kaagaz and Lekin.
She has also won four Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards. In 1969, she made the unusual gesture of giving up the Filmfare Best Female Playback Award, in order to promote fresh talent. She was later awarded Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993. In 1984, the State Government of Madhya Pradesh instituted the Lata Mangeshkar Award in honour of Lata Mangeshkar. The State Government of Maharashtra also instituted a Lata Mangeshkar Award in 1992.
Mangeshkar has sung duets with Asha Bhosle, Suraiya, Usha Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Manna Dey, Hemant Kumar, and Mahendra Kapoor. And in recent times, she collaborated with Nitin Mukesh Vinod Rathod, S.P. Balasubrahmanyam, Pankaj Udhas, Mohammed Aziz, Abhijeet Bhattacharya, Udit Narayan, Kumar Sanu, and Suresh Wadkar, Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam, Jagjit Singh, Roop Kumar Rathod, and Gurdas Mann.
She's been the voice for composers across so many generations from Naushad to R.D. Burman to A.R. Rahman.
