Bollywood has celebrated India and its Independence through its movies over the course of many decades. Many films have been made that have celebrated our history and the freedom movement. Freedom Fighters and venerated leaders from history have been honored on silver screen.
Veteran Actor Manoj Kumar played a patriotic hero in many of his films. Films like Shaheed, Mother India and Haqeeqat have been iconic. Sunny Deol, Ajay Devgan, Aamir Khan and Shahrukh Khan too have made movies where they play freedom fighters or patriotic nationals. Today, as India celebrates its Independence Day, we list for you the top five films that you can watch today. These movies have instilled within us a sense of pride for our country.
1) Chak De India
Ace Hockey player Kabir Khan (ShahRukh Khan) gets an opportunity to salvage his reputation and image when he is offered to coach the National Women’s Hockey Team. Blamed for failing a shot at the finals of World Championship, he lives with regret and a burning desire to get India the coveted medal. How he trains the team and their trials & tribulations make for a great Independence Day watch.
2) Rang De Basanti
A group of friends from University get the shock of their lives as their reel life turns real. From Playing Freedom fighters in a documentary to turning into fighters in real life who set out to avenge the death of their friend, this film will stir you. Aamir Khan plays the pivotal role and is brilliantly supported by Kunal Kapoor, R. Madahavan, Soha Ali Khan, Sidharth and Sharman Joshi.
3) Border
The film is based on true story of war between India and Pakistan in 1971. When faced with an attack from over 2000 armed Pakistani soldiers and tanks, the Indian army who are just 150 in number rise up and fight for the pride of their motherland. Strong performances by Akshaye Khanna, Jackie Shroff, Suneil Shetty and Sunny Deol make take the film to an altogether different level.
4) Swades
Based on the concept of ‘Brain Drain’, Swades is about an Indian Engineer who returns to his roots from America for a visit. Events unfold and Mohan (ShahRukh Khan) discovers and understands about his land, his people and their needs. As events unfold, he realizes the strong connect he has with his roots and moves back to his country – India. This film will stir up emotions of patriotism in all Indians who are living out of India.
5) Lagaan
The story is set in the latter half of the 19th century where a small village in India is under the rule of the British. Captain Russell imposes unprecedented taxes on the villagers and as rains fail, people are troubled and terrified. Outraged by the plight of fellow villagers, Bhuvan (Aamir Khan) makes an impossible bet with the captain. How he steers his team and the village to victory is what the story is about.
